Boost Your Confidence: The Power of Looking the Part

Writer: Helen GoldwynHelen Goldwyn

So many of my clients ask, "How do I get more confident?"—a natural question in a world where others, especially the seemingly successful ones, appear far more self-assured than we feel. However, I believe a more effective question to ask is, "How do I LOOK more confident?"

The Outside-In Approach to Confidence

Confidence isn't just a feeling; it’s also a behavior. By adopting confident body language, facial expressions, tone, and words, we project an image of self-assurance. The world then responds to us as if we are confident, reinforcing the feeling within ourselves. Over time, this external display fosters real, internal confidence.

You Don’t Need to Be an Actor—Just Practice

We all naturally shift our behaviors depending on the setting—how we interact with friends differs from how we engage with colleagues or teachers. The key is learning to access and practice more confident behaviors until they feel natural.

In my coaching sessions, we roleplay typical conversations, analyzing body language, tone, and word choice. We identify what makes someone appear less confident and develop strategies to adjust their approach. Then, we practice—again and again—until confidence feels second nature.

Why Practice Works

By rehearsing in a safe, consequence-free environment, we remove the fear of trying something new. As a roleplay consultant, I create realistic interactions and reinforce confident behaviors with positive feedback. The process isn’t just effective—it’s fun!

The Lightbulb Moment

I've seen countless clients experience transformational breakthroughs using this method. When they try assertive behaviors, employ effective communication techniques, and realize the world doesn’t collapse when they do—it’s incredibly empowering.

Confidence for Everyday Challenges

Even seemingly simple challenges—standing up to someone who undermines you, addressing someone who ignores you—can feel daunting. But with tried-and-tested conversational techniques, problems that have persisted for years can often be solved in moments.
